Culture at the Crossroads

Dear Friend:

It’s been a few years since we’ve had the First Thursday lunch series in Toledo, and we think the times call for us to start it up again. We have a program we think you’ll find interesting and fascinating.  Please consider it!

First Thursdays in October-November and January-April, noon to 1:15 p.m., with lunch, speaker, and discussion.

Location: St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 428 N. Erie Street, Toledo, OH 43604.  Free parking in Kwik lot adjacent to the church; your ticket will be stamped when you sign for lunch.

Theme: Culture at the Crossroads: Critical Issues of Our Time.

Speakers as of this writing:

October 5        Mike Beazley, City of Oregon Administrator: Threats to Democracy

November 2    Dr. Johnathon Ross: Healthcare

January 4         Eugenio Mollo, Jr., Advocates for Basic Legal Equality (ABLE): Immigration

February 1       Chris Vickers, WTOL Meteorologist: Local Efforts to Keep the Paris Accord

March 1           Dr. Samina Hasan: Being Muslim in America Today

April 5             Thomas Luettke: Issues facing Returning Citizens

Lunch: Simple soup and salad, gluten-free and dairy free. Brown bags welcome if dietary issues are a concern.

Cost:  $15 each by cash or check at the door.  Series discounts available:  $84 for 1 ticket for all six dates, $112 for a table of 8 for one date, $650 for 1 table of 8 for all six dates. Financial assistance is available for those in need.

Not a meeting.  Not a fund-raiser. Our intent is to provide an opportunity for a thoughtful dialogue around critical issues of the day. The dynamic process of the resolution, we believe, could well give shape to our evolving culture, locally and globally.

RSVP to FirstThursdayToledo@gmail.com one week in advance.

Sponsoring Organizations:  Association of U.S. Catholic Priests Toledo Chapter Social Justice Subcommittee (contact Fr. John Blaser, 419-000-0000) and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (contact Rev. Pete Bowmer, 419-000-0000).
